Does Apple repair or replace defective laptops under warranty?

I need to book a Genius bar appointment for my Macbook with non-working speakers.
I'd like to know if they replace or repair the laptop, because I really need it for work and can't afford not to have it for a few days.
Do they open up the laptop on the spot? Or do they run a software diagnostic and decide whether or not they replace or repair?
I would obviously prefer a replacement. Should I bring the original box and everything else to increase my chance? Mine is a stock model so they should have plenty in stock.
