one way to see if your button isn't working or if it isn't making solid contact against the bracket. You should feel a click when depressing the button, but you can always pop the screen up, then take off the home button bracket. Don't disconnect anything else.  Then using a fingernail or something to depress the back of the button while pushing on the front. This should wake up the phone, or other home button functions. If it didn't work then you may have bought a defective button, or the cable that runs along the back plate has been damaged. That is also replaceable. This happens sometimes when pealing it off the original screen where it is taped to. I heat mine up when removing that part and the home button on the 6, just with a hairdryer.  Note do not unplug or plug anything in without disconnecting the battery first.
