first off the starter is an easy fix 2 to 3 bolts usually hold it on and some wires on the solenoid . The smoke was probably from the wiring on the starter overheating . So with this in mind before replacing the starter check the connections at the starter. there may be a bad contact causing the problem  or just the starter solenoid on the starter . Try by passing the solenoid t o see if that's the problem. Hope this helps
