Our Sony Bravia KDL-40V5100 suddenly froze, hiccuped and stopped showing an image. Instead the display started showing vertical lines that look like an aurora borealis. Sony support told me that the panel is dead. We also thought that maybe replacing the t-con can fix this, but somehow it's doubtful. Sony tech on communities.sony.com suggested resetting something on the on-screen menu. I guess he missed the part where there is no menu and no longer a screen. In other words Sony was not helpful - neither the telephone support nor the techs trawling the communty boards. (Trolling may be apropos)
=== Update (10/26/2016) ===
So I got around to opening up the panel of the KDL 40V5100 and found that there is a heat sink covering the T-Con.
