Why is my iPod not picking up any wi-fi?

i got this ipod touch (1g) and it don't pickup any wi-fi even if i'm 1 ft away. my friends ipod get's the signal but mines don't at all. i upgraded to 3.1.2 but it still don't work. any suggestion? thanks
