blacked out screen -tips to replace cable

The screen is blacked out on my Samsung Tablet 10.1. I can hear the ATT logo come up and try to start. I ordered a new p4 cable, but they don't seem to want to be pushed through the 'port'. Is there a trick to it? I don't want it to bend.
