no batteries available after trying multiple batteries

I replaced a dead battery on macbook air. Did (numerous) SMC reset and PRAM reset. Says no batteries available. Used a batter checker (multimeter) and the battery connectors show power. Yet macbook air does not recognize the battter. All other functions are normal, though. Also, relplaced dc-in - made no difference.

What should I look for (other than accept this is now a mac mini with monitor).
