Mine did this the other day, but I have discovered that the battery IS removable. There is a big black sticker above the joint, I should have done a teardown, but it does come out fairly easy. The steps you guys posted did not help me, as I was having the same [black screen, red LED] issue. Simply disconnect the battery to power off the device and it should be good as new! It does come out, but you need to get that black tape and other parts off first. This IS iFixit, after all.
