I think you should be able to get it working again by flashing the firmware over the phone which should not wipe any data on your phone but basically re-install the system software on your phone without any reset.
Download the system software from this website:

You will need to specify your model number which you can find at the back of your phone at the battery compartment.
You will need to also use a program called ODIN which you can also download it from Sammobile when downloading firmwares (system updates). Follow the instructions on the website and you should be fine.

Otherwise if you want to be safe, you will need to download a custom recovery called Clockworkmod for your Samsung Galaxy S3 which you can put it on your phone via ODIN while your phone is in 'download mode' and plugged in. This way you can actually backup everything on your phone to a microSD card while on that custom recovery. Note that you will need to mount /data and /system to backup most if not all the stuff on the phone. I'm a bit busy right now to type down instructions.

TL:DR - You need to flash a stock ROM over the existing one. Use the latest Android Version and operator (What network provider you use) which matches your phone. This basically should allow you to boot up the phone with your data fine. Hopefully it's just a software update issue that can be fixed by just reflashing the stock ROM via Odin with your phone in download mode.
