My first instinct would be to go on the TomTom site and see if there are any available firmware updates for your GPS.

When devices I have start doing this (I had a similar problem with a 2nd Gen iPod Nano) I let them do their own thing until the battery is completely dead. Then I charge the battery all the way up, and that has given me some success.
