@kev besides getting a new battery as @alinorne suggestion I also notices in your question that you said "Making sure the battery connector / lightning cable connector is intact and is not ripped" I would suggest that you do more than check it, replace it instead. A faulty connector would prevent your phone from charging and prevent your phone from being recognized. Use [guide|29915|this guide] to work on it.
