Error message of reboot and select proper boot device

My laptop was working fine then when I turned it on I got ``reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key,``
by chance it booted properly once so I put it into sleep mode and when I got home to put a usb stick in so I could transfer my files it was back to ``reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key,``
Since it reset itself once I am hoping there is an easy fix. on this site there is 2 pieces of equipment, the ram and the hardrive. it is the hardrive that is malfunction right? If I switch it out would I be able to get my documents? I am a writer and my work is on it.
