Functioning iPod nano 2g not recognized by itunes

I have a nano 2nd gen that functions in every respect - it plays music, I can reset it and take it in and out of disk mode, access the full menu, etc - but it's not recognized by iTunes, nor as a volume when in disk mode.  If it's a knock-off, it's an extremely convincing one.  Any ideas?
