Well....
A couple of reasons why this may happen:
# the little nubs on the hold switch are broken off. It is housed on the front panel.
# the hold switch itself is broken off. It is housed on the logic board.
Either way, it seems like you need to [guide|745|open up your iPod], unfortunately.
+Unfortunately, these machines are NOT easy to get into. They have very delicate clips around the outside that make getting a new rear panel almost a necessity whenever replacing anything else. Just wanted you to know beforehand, so you're not surprised.
