I had 'sound issues' with a previous MacBook Air and rather than suffer the bother/cost I bought a newer model 2 years ago and now have the same sound issues. The symptom is an iratic static or crackling sound. This can happen too during the Apple sound when turning on. It seems to be exascerbated or worsened when it gets warm as in during streaming a movie. I suspect there is a flaw with the sound card cable - my older Mac lost all function at the headphone port. I have tried everything I can in terms of software fixes - resetting the sound card, restting the PRAM and even reformatting from back up using TimeMachine - nothing has worked. So, I taking it to an Spple Store for diagnosis and repair - sadly it is out of warranty now; however, I feel strongly the this is an issue which Apple knows full well about and there should be a recall issued.
