Will not awaken from sleep if cover is closed

If I leave the MacBook open, it will go to sleep automatically. I touch any key and it awakens normally.  If I close the cover to put it to sleep, when I open

the cover, it does not awaken.  I have to restart it as if I had shut it down.

What must be done to fix this?
