Will not charge when connected

When I connect my iPod to my computer and open up iTunes, the iPod flashes on and then goes black. It does this a number of times and then finally goes to the "connected" screen. It doesn't show up in iTunes and it doesn't charge. This was purchased in 2007. Is there no hope?
