The question mark on start up means it can't find a system folder. It does not mean the hard drive is bad. The hard drive may have connection problems or a corrupted system. Start up from a system installation disk, go to the second page, pull down menu and go to Utilities-> Disk Utliity and see if you can repair the drive. Then try restarting.
