LED off, after recharging and replacing batteries.

I recently bight a 2nd hand Nikon F301, which came with charged AAA energizer rechargeable batteries installed. After the batteries got drained, I recharged them with an energiser AA/AAA charger I have, which can only charge two batteries at a time. when i inserted the now charged 4 x AAA batteries into the camera, the camera did not light up in the view finder when i half pressed the shutter button on single shot mode. Initially I thought the problem was that the batteries could have been un evenly charged so I bought a new set of batteries, but the problem persists. I octuple checked the batteries and how I placed them but still nothing.
