I would disassemble the iPod and clean it with isopropyl alcohol (>90%) and a soft paintbrush. clean it carefully - the tiny parts are fragile, look out for "odd" looking stuff, mostly it's white/greenish residue. use one of the step by step guides to disassemble you device.
