First check to see if the hard drive is full.  10-20% free space is really needed.  Next I would use something like TechTool to de-fragment the files and then optimize the hard drive. Maybe someone knows of some "shareware" that will do the job.  Check to see in "About this Mac" if all your RAM is being seen.  Consider getting a new faster hard drive.
