I use the iSeasmo tool to open the 5, 5c, and 5s, never had an issue with it scraping the paint on the underside. If you slide just the tip between the glass and the midframe. Just to the left of the home button and gently pry up. Even with this method I still get some separation of the bezel from the glass, but gently slide the iSeasmo (or similar pry tool) along the sides underneath the bezel and it pops up as you want. I find that 2mm double sided tape works "OK" to reaffirm the bezel to the glass, but found this article by googling a better alternative.
