I think the buttons only have to be cleaned.

diesassemble the ipad like shown in this [guide|2535|guide] (but you can see the volume button in step 3 - so you dont have to go all the way with the guide)

clean the button assembly with isopropyl alcohol (>90%) and a soft paintbrush

the needed tools are listed in the guide
