flashing "?" mark, no start-up on a1144 G5 17"?

My 2005, a1144-G5, 17" has the flashing "?" mark, and will not boot! So far I hear it needs to be rebooted, or the operating system needs reloading. Tried the basic restarts with no luck! I have OS 9.1 "2001" but don't want to lose OS-X if it can be retrieved!
