The 1st Gen Touch has just a little bit of plastic holding the touch button in place. It's possible that this plastic is displaced and the button can now recess. 
 You can try to pry the button back out to see if it is loose, but this may kill the limited function you have as it is.
 Other than that, [guide|637|open it up] and check it out!
