as it turned out, at least in my case,

I plugged in a usb trackball and got all functions back.

the owner had messed up the trackpad setting soooooo bad

it acted like it wasn't working.

Once running off the usb trackball

the settings were reset back to something useable .

no replacement trackpad was necessary.
