Can't decide if the battery is dead or the HDD?

crwdns2934249:0crwdne2934249:0:

Hello,
I just found my old 3rd gen iPod and wanted to use it again.
I have the dreadful apple logo and folder with exclamation mark flashing after pluging it in the firewire charger.
I tried the diagnostic mode, and it doesn't seem to pass the HDD scan, I launched it and it stayed all lit up with just HDD scan on the screen for a while and started heating up. It's been 30 min and the test isn't over yet... but I remember when I stopped using my ipod 4 years ago I had issues with the battery.
Prior to the hdd scan I ran the A 2 D test for the battery but never got this type of reply which I found online when looking for the diagnostic mode. my ipod was charging during the test.

''"Tests the iPod's power. Your results should look something like this: "3.7V 0X000000E2 CHG OK FW 1 BAT 1". The results will be different depending if your iPod is plugged into your computer, a wall outlet or is just running off battery power.''"

Do you have any ideas what the issue could be?
I'd like it to work again but I am ready to replace one component so do you think the issue is battery related or the hdd?
Thank you very much for your help!
