I cannot unlock the battery door on my computer.

I have not been able to unlock the door for the battery so I cannot replace the failed battery.  I hear a click when I turn the locking device with a quarter to the unlock icon, but nothing releases and when I turn it over, it does not fall out.  Additionally, I can turn the lock all the way around it's circle, but it does nothing.  I can't pry the battery out or I will ruin the case or break something internal.  Any ideas on what I should do?
