Every one that I've done has had '''paste on the CPU and a pad on the VGU('''VGC). ''FWIW these were/are notorious for the VGU solder joints failing... ''in addition to the thermal pads shims were added to it on either side of the silver foil protecting the bottom of the logic board as a DIY "fix" to keep the VGU functioning for months/years after fractures started to cause video problems. I think the pad was/is essential to the design in trying to keep the solder from cold fracturing.
