This only seems to be a problem for iPhone 3GSs that have had a replacement battery. The answer to the question 'why?' is likely a firmware verification issue that is specific to the battery hardware. During an IOS upgrade, the system does a firmware verification and this is when the error 29 is displayed.

The iPhone I fixed was perviously repaired by an amateur, screws missing, antenna spur bent etc. They also fitted the wrong battery 616-0435, which was the real issue.

I replaced the battery with a 616-0431, put the phone in DFU and updated in iTunes to 6.01 without a hitch. My customer is now happy.
