iPod Touch 4th Generation: Front glass panel replacement.

My brother dropped his iPod, getting the infamous spider cracks on the front. It seems to still work, because I can partly "Slide to Unlock", but the glass itself is basically ruined, with bits missing and everything.

Basically, I want to know what would be needed to replace the glass. I found a part on Amazon, but despite owning iDevices for years, I've never had to repair one so I have no idea what I'm actually looking for.

If this will do the job, I'd be over the moon, but the fact that the 4th Gen has a higher resolution screen, and presumably a higher resolution touch sensor thingymajigger, I wasn't sure. Any help would be great!

iPod Touch 4th Generation: iPod touch stuck in recovery mode even after restore.

Hello,

Thanks in advance to anyone that can point me in the right direction for this issue.

I have an iPod touch (4th Gen) that has a completely blank (dark) screen. Connecting the device to my computer, I do hear the alert from the iPod to tell me a device is connected, and then iTunes notifies me it recognizes the iPod is in recovery mode and needs to be restored.

What I've tried:

Resetting. held sleep/wake and home button wile connected to power. nothing happens

Restoring in iTunes. Restore appears to complete. (no error messages)

DFU mode restore

As soon as restore completes, iTunes gives me the same message about detecting ipod in recovery mode.

Anything else I can try before cracking this thing open? Even then I still wouldn't know what to look for hardware-wise to fix.

iPod Touch 4th Generation: What parts to move from the broken screen?

Hi, I have successfully replaced several Touch 4th gen. screen assemblies but there is something I am still wondering about. No one really mentions anything about the adhesive you need to put on a new screen assembly. I got those but always have a hard time figuring out how to use it. The iPod Touch 4g screen adhesive is a big part and you have to remove the middle area (I do at least). Then on the top of the screen there is a small metal latch (step 9 in the Touch 4g screen replacement guide) that I alway move from the broken screen to the new one. But the adhesive seems to cover that part so I what I do is I only use the left top part of the adhesive and use some of the spare adhesive to glue the latch on to the new screen.

So I wonder what others are doing with the adhesive and if they move the latch over to the new screen. I have a feeling the latch helps keep the screen in place better than adhesive alone.

Also I always take the small pad under the digitizer cable from the broken cable to the new one. You can see it in step 13 in the same guide. It puts some pressure on the connection I think. This should have been in the guide.

Take a look at this picture: https://www.dropbox.com/gallery/943721/1...

You see the metal bracket on the top of the original touch screen. I have not been able to find anyone selling a touch/LCD with this bracket. So I always have to move it over from the broken one.

And regarding the adhesive I found out that I can use the same adhesive used for iPhone 3G/3GS except the top sticker which you cant't really use. At the top you need to get on the bracket from the old screen and put a thin line of adhesive (i.ex. cut from the top iPhone sticker) along the edge. And you need small strips along the sides of the screen. You can easily cut that out yourself. I am going to buy a roll of the 3M 300LSE like this one: http://cgi.ebay.com/3M-Sticker-tape-Adhe...

Not sure if I need the 3mm or 2mm. Anyway there doesn't seem to be much instruction or help on replacing the screen assembly although there are some good instructions on disassembly like on ifixit.

It seems like no one have had this problem before. I've done a lot of research, but i couldn't find a site that could help me.
iPod Touch 4th Generation: My Screen is White and Glitching

So I dropped my Ipod and when I checked it, there were no cracks, the touch screen works perfectly and so does the button. However, there is a small grey spot near the left side corner and wont clear up. It didn't do anything at first until I was changing songs and then my whole ipod glitched. The top half of the screen looks normal, but the bottom half glitches to this white smoky color. I tried resetting it and everything but nothing worked. I went into settings and into general and into reset. I reset the network settings. The white smoky-ness disappeared, but that gray spot remains. I don't want my ipod to glitch again after it is now working. I don't even want to turn it off in fear of the glitching. Please help! What should I do??

iPod Touch 4th Generation: Can Backlight be Repaired?

My sons iPod went through the washer. It still works except for the backlight. It will sync, it will unlock, play sounds, etc just just no backlight.

Warranty is useless so I've got nothing to lose. I haven't found a "6R8 coil" like repair for the 4th Gen Touch.

If I need to replace an entire board, which one? If there is a component to replace, which one? I have the skills to do the work, just need an idea where to start.

Thanks!

Update

@oldturkey03 Depends on what you mean by the backlight or LCD. I see no backlight at all in this Touch. If I put a flashlight on the screen I can see the icons on the LCD, can navigate through different apps and settings, and verified that the brightness settings are at max with auto brightness both off and on. Any settings here change nothing and seeing what is on the screen is unchanged.

I appreciate any ideas you have. Believe me, you aren't going to hurt my feelings. The IC that you have pointed me to is a good idea, unfortunately the pics point show locations on an iPhone, not the iPod (if it exists).

With nothing to lose, I took the unit apart tonight got out the alcohol and cleaned like a mad man. Got it all back together and no change. Unfortunately I failed to see your post until after I got the unit back together. Had I read up beforehand I could have looked for a similar IC. Too bad it's unmarked.

Again, other ideas are appreciated. I wish there was a way to determine if the LCD/LED sandwich was faulty or a component on a board was bad. I have sent this unit into iRESq and they said it wasn't worth the repair. Had I been smart I would have asked for more details, was it the mainboard or the LCD. I should call them back tomorrow and find out. I'd presume the mainboard.

It's kind of a bummer how little info there is on these units when the iPhones and previous gens of the Touch have tons of info.

Thanks again!
