Toaster: nichrome wire selection for toaster repair

I have a vintage toaster that has been limping along for half a century or more, with sentimental value. I have already twisted together bits of nichrome in several places where it was broken and am thinking it's time to replace it all. I'm looking at ordering nichrome wire for this purpose and haven't figured out the specs on the wire to order. Suggestions?

This page is helpful, though a bit confusing:

http://www.jacobs-online.biz/nichrome/Ni...

Professional Series PS77401: Why won't my toaster latch when lever is pressed down?

Toaster is a Professional Series PS77401. When lever is pressed down, the elements light to toast bread but the lever will not lock down. I have the toaster apart and the spring is good. It seems like the magnetic armature is not energizing where the two red wires are connected. No lights will light by the defrost, reheat or bagel buttons. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks.== Toaster will not latch down.== Heading text == ==

Toaster: 1950s GE Toaster tray doesn't stay down--science needed!

Hello Hello,

I've got a 1950s GE toaster that I found, and have been refurbishing in my spare time.

I've gotten everything to work except that the tray won't actually stay down. I'm guessing it might be a solenoid problem. But here's the thing: I have no idea how to test whether my solenoid is working or not, as I know not much about how an electromagnetic field should behave in various states.

When my toaster is actually on, what readings should I be getting on my multimeter which would inform me whether my solenoid is still working? Where should the prongs of my multimeter actually be? Am I going hot wire-ground? That's how you do it in a car, but how do you do it in a toaster! Holy smokes!

Here a some pictures of a the toaster in question when opened up, Apologies for the poor quality. The first image is front facing, the second one if taken from below, with a clear view of the solenoid.

Thanks a whole bunch!

Oster 6344 Toaster: Why won't lever work

Nothing is bent and the crumb tray is clean. So why won't the toast lever say down? Is it done with magnets (as our other toaster will only work when plugged in for the lever to stay down). Could the magnets stop working if that is indeed what keeps the lever down? I hate to ditch this toaster and if I could get it to work, I'd return the one I just bought.
