The one answer I found here mentions clipping to the ground on a wall socket, but I don't have one near my table and that sounds like a recipe for disaster as I don't know enough about electronics to avoid posting this question.

I have also read that I should clip to the bare metal of the pc case or power supply I'm working on, but I'm going to be upgrading old Thinkpads, so that's not really an option.

I have two potential options:

- a metal lamp, painted, that is plugged in. Though that isn't a three prong plug so I don't know if that counts.

-I could also borrow my old man's desk. It's in a carpeted room and is fully enameled, but it does have a metal frame. Could either of these work?

Any suggestions or feedback are appreciated!

Thank you, so very much, for your response. I tried resetting both the new and the old drives and the results were exactly the same with both. The IBM recovery disk fails to initialize, but it did start without changing the boot order in Bios. So maybe I can rule out a power supply or mother board problem. I doubt if the new disk was tested before it was sold and it may have bad sectors. I don't know if it was properly reformatted because for the brief time, that it ran, names of the former owner's appeared on a log in screen, along with the windows XP operating sytem logo. I'm not sure if this indicates a complete erase. IBM warns that the frequent removing and installing of hard drives can cause damage. So I hope that I haven't jumped from the frying pan into the fire with my attempt to repair.

Accidently plug the laptop to another AC adaptor, and see the back screen, tried to use the orignal AC adaptor, same situation.

After checking found the the AC adaptor I used was having output greter than 19V.

what could be the issue?

It came with a 2878 dock and a battery. I am unable to find a charger that fits the 2878 dock but is able to find one that fits the laptop itself. The battery is able to be charged by the device (the battery LED was amber then it turned green), and when unplugged you can hear the coil whine of the battery/motherboard circuit. However, no matter what I do the machine will not turn on (the power LED will not come on)

And thus I took apart, cleaned and reassembled every part. The symptoms remain, so I probably didnt made it worse.

Note that my unit come with a fingerprint sensor, and that the hard-drive is missing. However, I do not think either of these will prevent the machine from powering up and post. I put a Win NT workstation disk in, just in case.

It come with two stick of Hynix DDR2 memory, but then, again, this should not prevent it from powering up.

The machine come with a full set of Centrino (north, south, CPU, wireless), and I think it is the 900 Series Sonoma Pentium M Dothan “variant”. It also come with AMD ATi FireGL Mobile.

Laptop turns on on AC even if battery is inserted.. but doesnt charge or takes power from battery.

Laptop doesnt turn on if only battery just inserted.

instant switches off if removing ac while battery is inserted

laptop outputs power

battery outputs power as well

cant find where is the problem..
